Toad-n-the-Hole (GF Option)

By Kelly · 18 Comments

A blast from the past, Toad-n-the-Hole is quick, easy, fun, healthy and delicious! Just follow the step-by-step instructions with photos below. You can make Toad-n-the-Hole using the bread of your choice, whether it’s homemade gluten-free or grain-free bread.

This is a great recipe to make with children ages 6 and up (under close supervision of course). For some helpful Kids in the Kitchen tips and strategies, check out Cultivating Little Sous Chefs.

STEP ONE: Butter a slice of gluten-free or grain-free bread and cut out a fun shape in the middle using whatever cookie cutter you have on hand. (No cookie cutters? Simply use a glass to cut out a circle in the center.)

STEP TWO: Heat a skillet over medium heat. When hot, butter the skillet and add the GF bread slice butter-side facing up. Also add the cut-out shape butter-side facing up.

STEP THREE: Crack an egg in a small bowl and then carefully pour it into the center of the cut-out as shown. Add sea salt and freshly ground pepper, if desired.

STEP FOUR: When egg white becomes opaque, gently flip the Toad-n-the-Hole over. (Remember to flip over your cut-out shape as well.)

STEP FIVE: Serve with fresh fruit and ENJOY!

Very interesting! Can you cook the egg a lot more than that without burning the bread?

Yes, Linda, you sure can. Just break the yolk by poking it with a knife and use a lower heat temp – those two steps will enable you to cook the egg yolk through without burning the bread. Blessings, Kelly 🙂

I came across your blog today and am feeling hopeful! I have been so discouraged with eating/cooking well and your blog has some wonderful ideas for making delicious food! I have a question…we have 5 kids and the oldest does not like eggs one bit…to the point of throwing up. I can get eggs down my other kids no problem, but when I make eggs for the family I am at a loss as to what to make him without making a whole different breakfast. Do you have any ideas what I could do for him that would give him a good amount of protein like eggs? All I can think of is yogurt.

Hi, April! Welcome! So happy you found my site. I have the same problem, so you’re not alone. I provide my older son with the egg aversion a nitrate-free sausage link in place of eggs. Another trick is if we’re doing toast, eggs and fruit for the rest of the family, he’ll get nut butter on his toast with fruit and no eggs. Like you mentioned, I also provide him with strained whole milk yogurt (thicker greek style yogurt has higher protein) and he also loves almond flour muffins which are high in protein. Then there are breakfasts that we all enjoy that contain eggs in them such as French Toast and almond flour muffins and almond flour pancakes – which again due to the high protein content of almond flour helps him (and all of us) to have a good source of protein. I hope this helps! Blessings, Kelly 🙂

Thank you so much for taking time to respond. Those are very good ideas! I haven’t used almond flour yet, but have been considering it. I will be referring to your blog more! 🙂

I would opt to put a little coconut oil in the pan and it should work just fine! And yummy too! 🙂

Thank you so much !!!! One another thing….. I have read that you should eat fruit alone , not with your meal. What is your thoughts on that ???

Hi, Bev. Thanks for your question. I’ve heard that as well as a theory that you shouldn’t eat fruit in the morning. It seems like there are a TON of theories out there on what to eat and not eat, and research of course to back the multiple theories even those that conflict with one another. My food philosophy is that there isn’t a one diet fits all. We’re all unique individuals and so for one person fruit in general may not be helpful (in the case of someone with candida), whereas another individual may be able to eat fruit whenever they please without issue. My goal here is to encourage people to eat real food – food that God created for our sustenance rather than processed man-made foods. When we do this, it makes it so much easier to begin to figure out what further adjustments we need to make – what foods work and what foods don’t for our particular health issues. So if eating fruit alone seems like a logical option for you, that is wonderful. Give it a try! You’ll be eating real food and that’s what counts! Personally, I get a little jittery if I eat fruit alone, but I have a super high metabolism, so I have to be careful to balance anything sweet or carb with a little protein. Again, everyone is different! And that’s why there really can’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to healthy eating. Lots of blessings, Kelly 🙂

I love that theory …..I am going to continue to have some fruit with my breakfast. I am new to your site and I appreciate all the great recipes you have and I too think unprocessed foods are the best. You have a blessed weekend , and thank you !!! I just purchased Honey Pacifica Sage Raw Honey from amazon. I looked at our whole foods and they did not have it . It was cheaper to order it from Amazon that Pacifica web site.

Thanks, Bev! You have a super blessed weekend too, sweet friend! Hope you enjoy the honey! And, if you happen to have a local farmers market or two in your area, you might want to check there to see if there’s a local honey source. That’s always a great way to save money and support a local farmer. Lots of blessings to you, 🙂 Kelly

we called these “pop-eye’s” growing up, and my kids love ’em. Some will prefer the egg soft and dip the bread in the yolk, then use the cut-out center piece of toast as a platform for the remaining white egg, other kids prefer the egg cooked hard.
